07 September 2013 Philadelphia Athens Poros

Since our return back home we spent most of our time getting ready for the next
chapter of our Odyssey.

On September 7th. Ron and I took off for Athens packed (one suitcase each) to perfection, in order to spend two months on the island of Poros.

We stayed with my sister Sophia at her lovely apartment with it's huge verandas filled with buganvelias
and jasmin. While in Athens we prepared for our stay on the island which included
purchasing wifi connection etc..

Filled up her car and started on our route to Poros. Here is the road we took via Korinthos, Epidauros.

The ride was wonderful over the National highway which lead us to Peloponnesos, we continued
along the sea on the two lane road that took us by the lush green mountains overlooking the
beautiful blue waters of the Argosaronic gulf.

Here are some views, some from the car and some whatever I managed to take, while I made Ron stop the car so that I could cross to road and climb over the rocks to look down at the magnificent new Epidauros. (There is a new and an old one!)

Sorry about the dashboard reflections..

The sea was as calm  as a sheet of glass, in between the little island one could see a band of darker water created by the whisper of the breeze blowing from the North.

We went by a small town where the farmers market was at it's peak, we decided to purchase our fruit and vegetables there, what a great idea, we ended up with the sweetest tomatoes and especially
delicious grapes, along with the rest of the salads.

In about 20 minutes we arrived in the town of Galatas were we took the ferry to cross over to the Island of Poros (5 minute ride)

Here I need to explain , the island of Poros has a very unique location, situated almost tucked in

the Saronic Gulf that on one side you have the Peloponnese peninsula and at a very short distance
Poros is just across from it.

Here is some information about the island:

Also something that

Henry Miller wrote in his book "Colossos of Maroussi" when his ship pulled into that narrow part of the sea heading  to Poros,  "I suddenly understood that we were sailing through its roads. If there is a dream that I love more than anything, is to float on the land. When you arrive in Poros you have the illusion that you see a deep dream. Suddenly the land binds you from all the sides and the boat is driven to a narrow passing that seems to have no ending.

Some more you might find interesting that other well known writers have mentioned in their books:

Leaving Galatas , these little boats are the water taxis

Looking at Poros

We arrived at the house filled with anticipation and hope that it would be just as
wonderful as the last time we saw it.
And OMG it most certainly was, with it's spectacular view from it's terraces.

Once we unpacked we went to town and had by the sea side, a meal that somehow felt like home cooking....one of my favorite childhood memories.

A perfect day.
